WELCOME, FRESHERS !

My sincere apologies to all those freshers who have landed up in this Department and for whose welcome a newsletter with such a name is being published! But as they say, what’s in a name?! Life is full of surprises though, as will be discovered by the “unfortunate” ones who would lag behind in the “depsi” race, for ours happens to be the most colorful of all departments. The colors, however, will unfold gradually…

Till then, happy reading!

Text Box: HOD’S MESSAGE
   Role of Textile Professionals in the new era
Globally, textile and textile products including clothing play an important part in the world economy and in international trade. The global trade of textile and clothing exceeds US $330 billion and account for 8% value of manufactured goods traded in the world and over 14% of world employment. With the phasing out of quotas and dismantling of Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) restrictions, the global textile trade is expected to grow at the very rapid rate as the countries that export textile and clothing will no longer have to stick to quotas that MFA dictated. In the new world of global textile trade, competitiveness will determine who sells how much and to whom. A WTO study suggests that India’s share of the global textile market will grow from 3% to 15% by 2010. Most modest estimates projects exports to rise from around 13 billion US dollars at present to about 40 billion US dollars by 2010. Even this will lead to significant growth of Indian textile and clothing industry. In addition, we have a large domestic market (18 billion US$) which is also growing at a healthy 8% CAGR.

HOD’S MESSAGE   (contd….

To succeed in the big domestic as well as export markets in the competitive environment, Indian textile and garment industry will have to do the  following:

     1. Set-up large sized production units and achieve the economies of scale;
     2. Adopt latest technologies to improve quality, consistency and reduce cost;
     3. Increase productivity and enhance cost effectiveness;
     4. Cut lead times and meet tight delivery schedules;
     5. Focus on value addition and product differentiation;
     6. Invest in product development and product innovation;
     7. Create flexible manufacturing capabilities;
     8. Invest in training of human resources and upgradation of worker skills.
In this new era, innovation will be a key driver of growth. Creating and adopting new technologies will allow companies to generate faster and more sustained growth. In view of fiercely competitive textile and apparel market, Indian industry must improve the technical competence, R & D capability and knowledge base. In these areas, Textile Department at IIT Delhi can play a significant role.
Department places major importance on development of analytical and reasoning abilities as well creative abilities of students. A new course started during the current semester on Product Development should lead to innovative new products and train the students in processes of product development.
During the 44 years of existence, Department of Textile Technology has acquired a status of excellence in textile education. Alumni of the Department have made name in their profession, both in India and abroad.
Our students hold very senior positions in industry, teaching, research and public services. Many of them have turned into first generation entrepreneurs and are running very successful enterprises.
Industry expects Textile Department and its alumni to play a major role in the growth of the textile sector and students can look forward to a bright future as the textile companies expand their activities and move into challenging new areas.
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the students joining us this year and wish them a fruitful stay at IIT  Delhi and very bright and prosperous future.

THE CZECH FUNDA

On account of a common understanding with the University of Liberec, Czechoslovakia, in summers every year some students, generally from the second year, go to Liberec for some projects. This is a unique opportunity for the students to acquire knowledge and to discover another culture. The students are selected on the basis of their department ranks. And of course, this opportunity is a trademark of our department only!

                                            PROF DESK
Dear Students,
Welcome to the new academic session of 2005-2006. With this, we get to see a fresh team of TES executives, and also get to meet new friends and colleagues. Approximately 45 B. Tech. students and about 38 M. Tech students have joined our department. I feel happy to welcome them into the folds of TES.
Fresher’s welcome is the first program of TES in the new session and with it I hope many more programs will be organized by our enthusiastic TES team. Interaction at various levels- professional, semiformal, or informal, and at various forums- classroom, hostel, or individual is necessary for an overall growth of the community in any learning institute such as IIT. TES provides one of such unique forums where students can interact with their peers, teachers and alumni in a semiprofessional environment.
I encourage all my student friends to come forward and promote this interaction by organizing and participating in various functions of TES.
I wish all the best to the new students, the new TES executive team and all other members of the society in this new session.
Ashwini K. Agrawal
Vice President, TES

THUS SPAKE BANDY

He was supposed to complete his B. Tech in 4 years. But now it’s taking him one more semester.

Wait wait… don’t rush to conclude anything about him yet! For, he was on one-of-a-kind special training in a company in Italy. Let’s hear from the man himself…

“Hi, I went to Italy for my Summer Internship. Professionally, it was an extremely satisfying experience. My ideas, suggestions were taken seriously and I had a lot of freedom of work. The conditions are such, that there is no one breathing down your neck all the time, and you just feel like working without anyone having to tell you to do so. I found that the people were very openly appreciative of ‘job well done’.

In my company, I found that the staff was very professional, we were always on time in the morning, and the workers always left for home on time in the evening. While working, they had this innate sincerity towards the work they were employed to do. But, after working hours, they were completely different men. I had a very nice experience which has surely benefited me in some way or the other. I wish good luck to all juniors who are trying to secure an internship abroad.”
