INDEST-NCSI Training Workshop on Institutional Repositories NCSI, IISc Bangalore, 27-29 July 2004 Organized by National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) Indian Institute of Science Bangalore In association with Digital Library Research Group Computer Science Department Old Dominion University Virginia, USA Sponsored by MHRD INDEST Consortium (http://paniit.iitd.ac.in/indest/) Brochure and Registration Form | Background An institutional repository (IR, also called as e-prints archive) is a digital archive of the research output created by the faculty, research staff, and students of an institution and accessible over the Internet to end-users both within and outside of the institution, with few if any barriers to access. As a facility it consists of hardware, software and procedures to capture, organize, archive, disseminate and manage digital research resources of the institution. IR’s provide a simple, web-based mechanism to researchers to deposit (‘self-archive’) and access their research publications. IR’s have the potential to bring significant benefits to educational and research institutions like yours: Improved visibility and impact of your institutional research - since the archive is freely accessible on the Internet, more researchers can consult and cite your research publications Help in establishing priority to your research findings Rapid communication of your research Long-term preservation of research papers Integrated view of your institutional research which is otherwise distributed over a large number of external sources Foster increased collaborative research projects and attract project grants Improved research knowledge management Create value-added services: Individual, department wise online publication lists, support citation linking, etc. Establishment and management of such IR’s has become relatively easy today with the availability of several free, open source repository software packages like DSpace and EPrints. Further, by using the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) interoperability protocol, content in these repositories can be easily shared at metadata level to establish a single-point cross-indexing and search service at national level. The same protocol enables integration of content in these repositories with worldwide cross-archive search services.alphabetical list. As an extension to the MHRD INDEST (Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology – http://paniit.iitd.ac.in/indest/) consortium established to provide shared access to e-resources, MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India) has advised all the consortium members to set up e-print archives using appropriate OAI-compliant e-print software. MHRD has also recommedned that a central server may be deployed to harvest metadata from all such e-print archives. It is strongly felt that if the submission of research publications is followed conscientiously at all participating member institutions, the combined collection developed in the process would significantly complement and supplement the traditional publishing approach. This workshop is organized to facilitate achievement of this directive. Workshop objectives To train participants from INDEST consortium member institutions in installing, configuring and operating OAI-compliant open source IR software like DSpace and EPrints To discuss standards-based metadata scheme for key document types like pre-prints, post-prints, technical reports and thesis and dissertations, for use in the repositories To demonstrate usefulness of OAI interoperability framework for sharing and creation of aggregated search services To bring awareness about a few related current developments Audience The workshop is mainly meant for INDEST consortium members, particularly IIT’s, IIM’s and NIT’s. Consortium members are encouraged to depute appropriate systems/library staff (see prerequisites below) who will be in a position to take advantage of the training to set up and operate institutional repositories in their respective institutions. Prerequisites Participants should be technically interested. The workshop will involve hands-on laboratory work using Red Hat Linux operating system. Participant should be comfortable working with Linux. Introductory understanding of HTML will also be useful. Terms such as XML, HTTP, and Dublin Core should not be totally foreign words. Topics and workshop methodology The workshop will be conducted in a laboratory equipped with 20 Linux/Windows workstations. Each participant will have a dedicated workstation. The workshop will include tutorial-type presentations, demonstrations and laboratory hands-on sessions. Workshop will cover following topics: Overview of institutional repository software, their features and functionality Metadata standards Installation and configuration of repository software Document submission and repository workflow Introduction to OAI interoperability framework and protocol Introduction to OAI-based harvesting services Demonstrations will be based on both live and sample digital library/ repository systems we have set up using software such as Dspace and Eprints at NCSI. Each participant will be given a CD-ROM containing the repository software and other related resources required for them to set up repository in their institutions. Workshop Fees No registration fee for INDEST consortium members. Maximum of 20 participants will be taken for the workshop. Lodging for the participants for the dates 26-30 July 2004 will be provided freely in IISc CCE hostel. Tea and lunch during the workshop days 27-29 July will also be covered by NCSI. Other expenses, including travel, should be borne by the participating institution. Registration Number of participants is limited to 20 (twenty).
